The 6th China-ASEAN Think Tank Forum of Strategic Dialogue was held in Nanning, Guangxi on August the 31st, sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the People’s Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and organized by the Bureau of Guangxi International Expo Affairs, the Guangxi Academy of Social Sciences and the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Development Institute. More than 100 scholars from think tanks, universities and research units from both China and the ten ASEAN countries attended the forum.

Attaining themselves to the forum’s theme of “China and ASEAN: Promoting Trust and Deepening Cooperation”, the attendees comprehensively summarized and discussed the new circumstances, the new requirements and the new sticking points which have emerged since the China-ASEAN strategic partnership and the China-ASEAN Expo were established ten years ago.

The forum’s opening ceremony was hosted by Lv Yusheng, president of the Guangxi Academy of Social Sciences and director of the Guangxi Beibu Gulf Development Institute. The opening ceremony was addressed by Huang Ribo, vice-chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region government, Jin Baoping, deputy secretary general and director of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Nguyen Quang Thuan, vice-president of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences.

Huang Ribo asserted that the China-ASEAN Think Tank Forum of Strategic Dialogue is a high-level meeting for the intellectual elite and opinion leaders from China and ASEAN. He noted that for the past five years, experts from think tanks, renowned scholars of strategic research institutes and government officials from China and the different countries of ASEAN have used the occasion to provide new ideas and strategies for comprehensively boosting the China-ASEAN partnership by exchanging views and experiences with each other.

Jin Baoping said that since the China-ASEAN strategic partnership was established five years ago, experts of think tanks from China and the ASEAN countries have put forward quite a lot of constructive proposals, many of which have been adopted by the relevant national governments, playing an important role in pushing forward the further development of China-ASEAN cooperation. “Holding the 6th China-ASEAN Strategic Dialogue Forum will enhance cooperation and friendship between China and ASEAN”, Jin claimed.

Nguyen Quang Thuan opined that China and ASEAN are close neighbors, and there are both historical relations and common interests between the two sides. He stressed that there is a strong and consolidated bilateral relationship between China and ASEAN, and there will be closer cooperation between them in the future as well.

Zhang Yunling, a CASS member and director of the CASS Academic Division of International Studies, gave a speech entitled “the China-ASEAN Strategic Partnership: Review and Prospects ”. In his speech, Zhang reflected on what the China-ASEAN partnership has achieved in the past ten years and also looked onwards to the next ten years from the perspectives of China’s post-cold war “new security concept”, the core and goals of establishing the partnership, and the position of the partnership within international relations.
