Li Jie, the vice president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), met with the Singaporean Ambassador to China Stanley Loh Ka Leung and his entourage in Beijing on the 8th of March. Both sides engaged in dialogue and discussion centered on the issues of common concern.

First of all Li expressed his welcome to Ambassador Loh, and also his willingness to strengthen communication between CASS and Singaporean academia.

Li claimed that CASS’s internal drive towards international academic cooperation has been strengthened. He added that there are two significant tendencies within current academic research: one tendency is to overcome the barriers between individual disciplines, and conduct interdisciplinary research from a broader perspective; and the other tendency is to strengthen integration and communication between international scholars, thus finding solutions to problems within a common setting.

Loh also pointed out that Singapore has always had a close relationship with China, especially in economy and trade. Last year Singapore’s investment in China ranked first, and meanwhile China has also become Singapore’ s biggest trading partner. In addition, the two countries enjoy long standing cultural ties, and many Singaporean experts maintain a close relationship with CASS’s scholars and experts. Loh added that the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore would like to continue building a stronger and deeper cooperative relationship with CASS.

Loh also inquired with Li about which issues are currently drawing the attention of the NPC deputies and CPPCC members.

Li said that before the opening of the NPC and CPPCC Annual Sessions for 2014, the representatives were expecting highly of the government work report. He claimed that facts have proven that this year’s work report has provided a scientific and comprehensive response to the most pressing social problems.

Li emphasized the fact that the issues on which the NPC deputies and CPPCC members are focusing revolve mostly around a few main themes. The first area of concern is the issue of reform. In comparison to the original reform carried out over 30 years ago, the current round of reform goes even deeper, readjusting and reforming the distribution of wealth. The second area of concern is urbanization. NPC deputies and CPPCC members have made suggestions on how to carry forth an urbanization based around the people, as well as on how to push forward this new round of urbanization. Other areas of concern are medical and educational reforms, issues of national defense, and the problem of air and industrial pollution. It is generally agreed upon that it is necessary to identify the underlying reasons which lie behind the air pollution..

During the meeting both sides also exchanged their opinions on certain important issues, including the Sino-American and Sino-Japanese relationships.

Wang Lei (director of the Bureau of International Cooperation of CASS) and Han Feng (deputy director of the National Institute of International Strategy of CASS) also attended the meeting.
