On May 28, a forum on international cultural trade was held in Beijing and a related report was released. The report shows that, currently, as the size and trade volume of China’s international cultural trade keeps expanding, China is playing an increasingly important role in the development of global cultural trade. The export of Chinese cultural products occupies a major share in the cultural trade market, and its cultural trade in various sectors shows an upward trend. The radio, film and television industries, the game industry, and the book industry show strong development momentum while the artwork and animation industries need to strengthen their competitiveness in international cultural trade.

The report mentions that, as the quality of Chinese cultural products and services continues to improve, the export of cultural products better caters to the demands of overseas markets, and the total foreign trade volume of the cultural industry keeps doubling. On the whole, the overseas cultural trade market continues to expand. China’s cultural trade with Belt and Road countries has gradually become dynamic, and it continues to reach out to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America and Africa. Private enterprises are playing a leading role in the cultural market.

The report points out that constructing a basis for the export of cultural products is key to building an innovative mechanism and system for cultural trade development and related policies and measures. By leveraging the leading and radiating role of cultural exports, we can summarize the models and experience of the innovation-driven development of cultural trade, cultivate a number of enterprises with stronger international competitiveness, and form more international cultural trade platforms with closer connectivity. This will help advance the high-quality development of China’s international cultural trade and provide strong support for enhancing the soft power of Chinese culture.

The report also envisions the development trend of the global cultural trade market and the market for China’s international cultural trade in the future. Different countries’ cultural and economic development will intensify the competition in the international cultural trade market, and the use of big data and the internet will increase. The model of international cultural trade will be changed, which will affect related industrial and value chains. In the future, a growing number of diverse entities in international cultural trade will emerge and the trade structure will be further improved. The proportion of Chinese cultural products and services in the global cultural trade market will increase substantially.
