On Oct. 18, the 2018 China National Image Global Survey, conducted by the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies (ACCWS) at China International Publishing Group and Kantar, was released in Beijing. A total of 11,000 people aged between 18 and 65 from 22 countries participated in the survey. The survey showed that China’s contribution to global governance is highly recognized in the fields of science and technology, economy and culture. The most prominent national image is still that of an ancient Oriental civilization and a great contributor to global development.

According to the survey, the overall impression of overseas respondents on China was 6.2 out of 10 points, continuing the small steady increase in recent years. With an average score of 7.1, overseas developing countries still have a better impression of China than developed countries.

The survey also found that high-speed technology, supercomputers and manned space technology are highly recognized as parts of China’s scientific and technological image. Overseas respondents are generally optimistic about the future development of China’s economy, and nearly half believed that China will make more contributions to global governance. The Belt and Road initiative and the concept of a community of shared future for mankind have gained increasing overseas attention.

Yu Yunquan, dean of ACCWS, said that the survey introduced hot topics such as the community of shared future for mankind and the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up. It covered the international community’s comprehensive perception of China in many areas, such as its national influence, politics, diplomacy, economy, culture and technology.

Shi Anbin, deputy dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University, said that when conducting a global survey on national image, a more scientific report series, including cognition reports and public sentiment reports, should be incorporated to reveal the image’s dynamic trends. It is necessary to improve China’s overseas image to better serve national strategies.
