To celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) held a special press conference in Beijing on July 2, releasing 11 major research achievements in Party history and Party building. Zhao Rui, vice president of CASS and a member of the Leading Party Members’ Group at CASS, addressed the event.
Zhao noted that the course of the Chinese nation over the past 180 years since 1840, the 105-year history of the CPC, and the more than seven decades of the People’s Republic of China since its founding have all attested to a fundamental truth: Without the CPC, there would be neither New China nor the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Since the 18th CPC National Congress, he said, General Secretary Xi Jinping has put forward a series of new concepts, new thoughts, and new strategies on the major question of “what kind of long-term ruling Marxist party to build and how to build it,” thereby formulating Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building. As the “Party Building Chapter” of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building holds milestone significance in the history of Marxist party-building theory and the CPC’s own party-building history, and represents a major original contribution to the development of broader Marxist theory on party building.
The research outcomes released at the press conference, Zhao continued, constitute CASS’s theoretical tribute to the CPC’s 105th anniversary. Standing at this new historical starting point, he called on scholars of philosophy and social sciences at CASS to prioritize the study and interpretation of the Party’s innovative theories—especially Xi Jinping Thought on Party Building—as a core political, theoretical, and academic task.
Zhao also urged efforts to advance the construction of an independent knowledge system for CPC history and Party building as a discipline through organized scientific research, ensure that high-quality Party building guides high-caliber research, and contribute intellectual and scholarly strength to further advancing the new great project of Party building in the new era.
The 11 major outputs include two theoretical articles published in major Party newspapers and journals, five monographs, one book series, and three academic papers: “Establishing Serving the People as the Party’s Purpose is Mao Zedong’s Important Contribution to Marxism-Leninism,” “Deeply Understanding and Practicing General Secretary Xi Jinping’s Important Thought on the Party’s Self-Reform,” Research on the Building of the Party’s Style in the Early Years of the PRC (1949–1950), “Deeply Understanding the Original Mission of the CPC Over Its Century-Long Journey,” China’s Economy in the Past Decade (2012–2022), Modern History of China, A Small Series of A New History of World War II, The Tempering and Maturation of the Communist Party of China: 1927–1945, “Historical Logic and Theoretical Character of the CPC’s Centennial Ecological Civilization Construction,” China’s Path of Human Rights Development, “Basic Experience of Full and Rigorous Self-Governance in the New Era.”
At the conference, author representatives including Zhang Haipeng (CASS Member and research fellow at the Institute of Modern History), Liu Zuokui (deputy director general of the Chinese Academy of History under CASS and concurrently Party secretary and director of the Institute of World History), Gong Yun (Party secretary of the Institute of Economics), Wu Li (a research fellow at the Institute of Contemporary China Studies), and Fang Tao (a research fellow at the Institute of Marxism) gave brief introductions to their respective works.
