JAKARTA—On Nov. 26, Gao Xiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), led a delegation to meet with Megawati Sukarnoputri, former Indonesian president and chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Gao noted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Indonesia. With the joint efforts of then Indonesian President Sukarno and the older generation of leaders of the PRC, the two countries formally established diplomatic ties in 1950, laying a solid foundation for long-term friendly relations. He emphasized that China-Indonesia friendship has been a blessing for both peoples and has made positive contributions to global peace and development. The purpose of the CASS delegation’s visit to Jakarta, he said, was to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries through academic exchanges and to explore ways to deepen cooperation in the humanities and social sciences. He expressed the delegation’s enthusiasm for contributing the wisdom and strength of China’s intellectual community toward the continuation and growth of the two countries’ friendly and cooperative relations.
Gao stressed that since entering the new era, President Xi Jinping has led the Chinese people in advancing the building of a strong country in all respects and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through Chinese modernization, achieving new historic accomplishments. These achievements, he noted, stem from President Xi’s leadership and the scientific guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. China will continue to follow this guiding philosophy, remain committed to building a modern socialist country in all respects, and continue to break new ground in Chinese modernization. Chinese modernization, he added, is not only committed to China’s own development but will also inject strong momentum into world peace and development. China stands ready to share the fruits of this process with all countries, especially developing nations, and to jointly pursue a path of peaceful development.
Sukarnoputri expressed full agreement with Gao’s assessment of the longstanding friendship between the two countries. She noted that China and Indonesia have maintained close commercial ties since ancient times and are now deepening cooperation under the framework of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. Speaking on Chinese modernization, she said that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has successfully eradicated absolute poverty, significantly enhanced its composite national strength, and made continuous progress in improving its ecological environment. She expressed heartfelt appreciation and admiration for the great achievements of Chinese modernization.
Building on this dialogue, the two sides also exchanged views on further strengthening exchanges and cooperation. Following the meeting, Gao presented Sukarnoputri with the first through fifth volumes of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China on behalf of CASS.
